a short throw shifter is a shifter that has a shorter throw than the stock shifter.

it is a relatively easy install

you gotta take out center console loosen some bolts and **** lol
then if u want u can drop the exhaust this makes it easier but is not necessary
then start taking apart shift linkage. im pretty sure there are DIY on here if not elsewhere.

Yup, josh pretty much nailed it.

They basically require less effort to shift, and they shorten the shift time by something like 40% most of the time. Not hard to install, and well worth the money.

VERY worth it. If you buy one do yourself a favor and get a name brand one. You'll save yourself the satisfaction knowing you won't grind gears.

Ok im thinking about getting a Skunk2 but are there any others I should be looking at?
Oh and what do you mean by dropping the exhaust? Like lowering the hangers on it?

You don't have to remove the center console... I didn't.
You just have to get someone to guide the shifter through the boot's hole while you install from underneath.

Get a Blox shifter rather than a Skunk2, they are the same.

OR, If you want dual bend and a good deal, go on eBay and order a Blox dual bend shifter from eBay seller StreetRays. He is out of stock until late January and will ask you if you want to upgrade to a Buddy Club dual bend shifter (a really nice one... worth $100) for no extra charge. That's what he did for me.

If he doesn't ask you, well... get a refund.

Skunk2 short-throws are one of the most popular shifters for civics; you'll be very happy with one, and I've yet to hear about one breaking (which can't be said for the cheap ones sold on ebay).

By dropping the exhaust, he meant taking the exhaust mid-pipe off (maybe the header, I haven't been under a civic in quite a while) to give you more room to work under the car. It's not necessary, but it'd probably make things easier (but will take longer). Also, when you switch to a short-throw, I'd recommend getting polyurethane shifter bushings (I'd say probably something like $20, but that's a guess) to further firm up your shifts.

^just the midpipe
if you have ratchet wrenches, you don't need to drop the exhaust to remove the heatshield.

ES poly bushings are like $13 shipped on ebay

yeah, the ES bushings should be $20 including shipping max and are definitely a great compliment to a short shifter. B&M is another brand to look into, a bit cheaper than skunk2 (i was findin them for 50-60 shipped when lookin for mine) but still a trusted name brand, the shifter is steel not aluminum so hard shifts wont break it and it has arguably one of the shortest throws of the aftermarket shifters. i have to say i am very pleased with mine and it is one of my favorite upgrades to the car.

and i did not drop the exhaust for my install, but i also have stock exhaust piping, if you have a catback with wider diameter then it might be necessary, otherwise it just makes it a little easier

What are the poly bushings and where do those go?
Sorry I'm still new to this stuff.
