Default input bearing replacement questions

I’m new and this is my first real post, so I’ll probably have more questions in this then is really necessary. Well here we go. My brother just bought a 2001 Civic DX. I’m a Mazda guy so I’m new when it comes to Honda’s. It’s a 1.7, 5-speed manual. It’s as stripped down as you can get, no tach, no ac, no power windows. Pretty nice car just needs some love.

Anyway the transmission is making a noise and I did a search. It seems to be the main input bearing. Noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th and noise in neutral with the clutch out. Before we figured that was the problem we changed the tranny fluid first to see if that would help. I’m fairly competent when it comes to mechanic work, but I just wanted to know if there is anything to watch out for or any tricks to make the job easier. I’ll be doing this on the garage floor. I read the write up by droopy, but I don’t know if that is the same transmission I’ll be working on. Also I don’t know what parts I need (two bearings and an oil seal). Any special tools? Bearing puller, bearing splitter, and snap ring pliers? I haven’t crawled under the car yet to find the transmission code, will I need that to get bearings ordered? I also thought it might be a good idea to replace the main shaft bearings with a sealed bearing to help keep contaminants out, might last longer. I just need to make sure I get the right size. Also will anything need to be shimmed? And what would be a good gear lube to put back in it. I just put in a quart of mobile 1 synthetic 75-90 and mixed it with a quart of Pennzoil syncromesh. It seems a little thin, so when I put it back together I'll probably use something a little stickier. Probably Redline MTL or MT-90, the Miata guys love it. What do you guys think? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Default RE: input bearing replacement questions

well, i'm in a very similar situation, as for the work, i aint scared, i'm just looking for the parts too.. mine is a 97 civic ex 5spd and the input bearing is GONE! i mean its still in the tranny but its as usefull as a screen door on a submarine.

as for the fluid, the book i have sais you can use 10-30 motor oil as a replacement for the true honda stuff... that honda stuff is like 4bucks a quart and it takes 2..

I'm gonna do the syncros, bearings, seals, and everything on mine cause it has 200k+ miles on it, so if you find a source for parts, lemme know...
