ok i have seen people talk about the OBX LSD transmission unit.. some people say they are junk.. well what unit does say the sunrise motors use??.. and is this something that a normal mechanic can swap/add into the transmission?? I am considering this if i end up sticking with d series do so cost issue and buying a Y8 motor or building up my crashed block and making mini me.

 

Sunrise would be selling the OEM LSD. Some of the JDM D15's came with factory LSD. Sweet. (I want one).

From nearly all accounts the OBX is junk, but then again I have never heard anyone say, "Dude, my OBX LSD just blew up and ruined my tranny." I am considering one since they are only ~$300 compared to a Quaife at a grand.

Any competent transmission guy/gal should be able to install one. I have never torna tranny down so I can't tell you first hand but... Find someone who rebuilds import trannys.

 

Just did my 3rd Quaife. They are not hard but you will need a special tool for removing and replacing a special snap ring. You will need to remove both the main shafts and the counter shaft. Not hard but this is where most screw it up and have to take it some place to put it back together. You WILL need a manual. Everything must be done in order or you jack it up.

I have the manual in pdf form if you need it.

The problem with the OBX is it is made from a softer metal and it will form around the half shafts making it impossible to remove them later down the road.

 

OBX is like Skunk2 IMO which is junk. Simply put you get what you pay for with this kind of stuff.

 

well what units do engine sellers use then when offering LSD?? most only charge 300 to add LSD.. and if quaife is expensive and OBX is only around 300.. is the LSD that is offered through sunrise etc.. the same quality as OBX.. or are these just factory trannies with LSD they have sitting around?

 

It is the stock LSD that come in OE honda transmissions. You have to remember that for years and years Honda has offered stock LSD's in Europe and Japan just not here.

So i should be checking advance and other to see if i can just get a stock OE replacement LSD tranny.. vs wasting money on a unit and installing?

 

No because Advanced does not have "JDM" or "EDM" parts nor cal or will they get them for you. Plus the stock units are only good up till around 300whp or so.

 

any suggestions then how/where to get one.. should i just try to keep checkin sunrise and other jdm motor sites?.. and since crash and cuz im quiting my job soon im canx getting the b series.. just gonna do a built mini me.. so i can have some decent pep and still get really good gas without spending much on engine.. ill probly only be ending up with around 150whp at most with 11:5:1 built MINI..
