2001 5 Speed Manual Transmission BROKE
Its been a while since I have posted guys and I thank you all for great responses prior. My issue is this. The other day I was driving home, and I was shifting from first to second BAM, just fine, and the going from second to third, well lets just say it didnt go into third. 1st gear kicked in and and put the engine to about 9 grand. WHOOOOO!!!! So heres the deal the motor is fine, however the tranny is making noise, I believe it is the pilot bearing or input shaft bearing. Thats what my mechanic told me. What do you huys think. Bascially the transmission sounds like it has straight cut gears. SO as you go faster the louder the wirring or whining gets. Sounds like a rear end going out. Mechanic says for sure he wants to tear into the tranny to be sure. Do i look for a used one or just fix mine, because there is nothing wrong with mine at all, its doesnt grind or anthing. Car has 87k on it with stock everything. Clutch is original and fine. A question here is, I want to make my fifth gear higher so when im on the highway in over drive i can drop my rpm's down about 500-800, better fuel economy. Any recomendations on that??? Sorry for the long post but i try to get all the details out. Any help is greatly appreciated, you guys are the best.

Is the transmission fluid low or gone?
Do you find a lot of metal debris in the transmission fluid when you drain it?
Does the transmission work better when drained and refilled with fresh Honda MT fluid?

Sorry, I changed the fluid last year, and I just changed the fluid again about a month ago, both time with genuine Honda MTF and just checked the fluid about a week ago. The tranmission itself shifts beautfiul, its like butter. Just that bearing. Mechanic says that it probably overheated the bearing and agravated it. Which I can see that. 9 thousand RPM's is no light load, Im suprised it didnt float the valves, but i do all my maintance and change my oil every 3 mo, or 3 thousand with M1 5w-20. Anyway its Honda. Thanks for the reply.

Well, your engine idles at almost 800rpm, so I don't really see you driving at that low of an RPM without the engine bogging down. I would imagine it would drive just as well as it would as if you were shifting from 2nd to 3rd, but did it way too early and drove at that steady RPM for a while. When you shift too early, the engine tends to seem to bog down. Honda engines don't really like driving at such low RPMs.

I apologize for not being more specific. Here is an example of what I mean. When I drive 80 or so on the highway my RPM gauge is at almost 4,000 so would i would like to do is drop that 5-800 so it would be at 35 or 3200 RPM's on the highway. Thanks again for the quick posts.

Oh alright. I see where I misread. I read "drop my rpm's down to about 500-800," while you really wrote "drop my rpm's down about 500-800."
I have no idea about the answer to your question, just when I read that the way I did I felt that I needed to say what I did know. However, I now see the information that I supplied as borderline-irrelevant. lol
