What is the benefit of bigger tires?
My 93 civic needs new wheels and tires. I want to get as much traction as possible and my steering to feels as sturdy as possible. What wheels and tires should I get and which sizes? Any help would be great!

Look at the all-season Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position tires, and the Rota Slipstream rims. These are very popular choices.

First things first, lets see what he's going for.
This has been covered before, but:
14" = comfort and drivability / not many options for performance summer treads
15" = great size and comfort / many options for tread (winter and summer) / recommended is a 205/50/15
16" = great size and losing comfort / again, many options for tread / more performance due to small sidewall ratio
17" = largest practical size and no comfort / many options for low profile tread / high performance due to very small sidewalls / con is weight depending on rim
any of these sizes can be bought in a 6.5" or 7.0" rim width.
As for tread, search on www.tirerack.com for reviews on the most popular tread and wear life and performance and make your own decision.

If he's not worried about ride, and only concerned with grip, why would 18x7s be a bad idea if lowered? A 205/35-18 is about the same width and diameter as a 205/40-17.
