axle popping out

axle popping out
On '89 DX the right side axle keeps popping free. I figured it was the retaining clip but since it was time, I decided to replace the half shaft. Installed the new shaft, verified it was "seated" (felt a good solid clip when pushed in and bell was up against tyranny) so figured I was all set. Never made it to the corner! Axle pops out again. When I look at the clip it looks ok...not worn or bent...but it appears tighter around the shaft compared to the left side. Any ideas??
I found a slight bend in the left lower control arm so I am replacing it. Also I replaced the tranny April '06 (used tranny not rebuilt) but used all new mounts, so my problem shouldn't be caused by tranny shifting or left arm being bent I don't think. Any help is appreciated!!

RE: axle popping out
Thanks for the reply! By all appearances everything else looks fine. Everything is connected, spindle was snug but I got it seated completely. Axle doesn't come out all the way, pops out about an inch. More than enough to leak all the trans fluid out!
The tip of the spline that goes into the trans looked a little roughed up but I figured that happened while finding a good mesh prior to pushing it in.
Should the retaining clip be loose? Like maybe able to hold it to one side so it sits up past the spline an 1/8th of an inch or so? Thanks!
