The Challenge of Four Bangers

Nice article...The most interesting thing was even with $15,000 in engine, $3,000 in suspension, another $8,000 in wheels and brakes most of the cars got through the 1/4 in the mid to high 13's. It took a Lancer Evo with $35,000 in engine and another $13,000 in suspension, tires, rims, brakes to get to the high 11's. I'm sorry, but for $48,000 I'm driving two or three different cars. Crazy money with out limits.[sm=bananallama.gif][sm=gears.gif]

you do understand that all of those mods werent for the quarter mile, right? i have seen guys with just bolts-on, no internal engine work, getting into the 10s with the Evo VIII, in person. those guys are only concerned with the quarter mile, whereas the buschur car is looking to be an overall performer. however, i agree about the pricing. some of those cars, like the STi, 91g for a mid 13 second car? i understand that it isnt made just for the straight line, but for 91g+, i could have a modded viper.

im sure that Levi will tell you, and il back him up, that it certainly doesnt take 50g to have an evo in the high 11s.

Good read. Maybe lotus will think twice about those Toyota engines now.

gary howell, who owns that neon that won the FWD class, is a member at one of my other forums...he has been teasing us for months waiting for the issue to come out, since hes not allowed to talk about it.

check out my double post..sorry

anyway, gary howell told us that those quarter mile times are so bad becaue they were not on a prepped drag strip..no burnout, etc. just a 1/4 mile stretch of plain roadway, which would account for the awful QM times.

for 60, 000...to put down mid 12 second QM times? ive seen CRX's run in the 11s, and im sure that they had no where near 60 grand into them.

Yeah theres an Eg Hatch owner around here that says hes only put 5g under the hood, and he runs DEEP 13's. If he could get traction he'd be in the 12's

exactly. last time to the track (non-nopi event) there was a hatch with a K20, and no interior, and he was in the high 12s.

however, these guys do a little more than just gut the car and drop in an engine...im sure that they would hammer most normal street cars on the twistie, but unless other cars have the ability to run the same course, comparison is difficult.

Kinda my point....how can they dump so much money into a ride....and come up seemingly short handed? At 6g for suspension they should be able to hang with any twisty road....and the 1/4 mile...well most of the cars where running large rims (which I thought was weird) but still...something isn't adding up. If it is true that we everyday wrenches can punch low 13s with backyard mechanical skills and stripped out EGs...how come some major $$$, vendor backed guys running with the holy grail of honda's engines piloted with semi-pro drivers can't get it together? The 2002 AEM was a stripped out ride with a turbo. Very comparable at 2525lb curb weight, and with 396bhp you figured he could run like a scalded ape. Just want to get a better understanding of it all.
