Fortunately for me, all I have to do is download someone else's binary file and go. $200 for a tune.
yeah that's an awesome idea...because all cars run exactly the same..

Actually it is, you don't spend much time outside of Honda land do you? Perhaps you are familiar with mass production? Anyhow given that every car of my make and model has the same basic components, as long as the person's file I'm using has the same mods it will be fine. Take a second and think about it.

I could think about it all day and it wouldnt make a difference... There are way too many other factors that come into play with tuning. My tuner created a basemap for me taking into account my motor, mileage, the turbo setup, fuel system setup, and everything else that these companies will ask you. The tune worked, but at idle it sounded like a lumpy cammed 350. No car/motor/setup is the same, even if it appears to be to the naked eye.

Long story short, unless they have your exact motor, turbo, and the rest of this **** sitting in front of them, theres no way that they can give you a dead nuts accurate tune.

....as a side note, I'm willing to bet that I've been around cars just as long, if not longer than you have.

Well, would the exact same exhaust, SC, Pulley, intake, injectors and make and model of year count? We will in fact have everything right in front of us. Even if they weren't and we had to edit some things it still wouldn't cost me $400 dyno time included. Maybe it was a little misleading, let me clarify. While I can download a binary file from an internet based company that's not what I'm doing. I'm having someone link their lap top to my car and downloading the file into my pcm. If we see changes needed to be made, we'll make them. I can do either one. And tons of people do the first option every day, dead on. I'm not tuning a Honda, I use different tuning tools. And looking at the supported vehicle list for the tuning software my vehicle uses, I don't see Honda anywhere on it. I'm sure you have something similar, but it's not like my situation, where there's only 2 year models of the car to date, there'll be more once the 07's roll out. Think before you guys start flaming. I enjoy learning about cars and talking about them, but people that get pissy because they don't know what's going on is something else entirely. Ask me to explain before I get smart A$$ posts. I'm more than willing to carry on a polite conversation and maybe I'll have a different experience than you to share. If anyone wants links to web sites feel free to ask I'm not just making stuff up because I like the way it sounds.

As a side note, it doesn't matter how long you've been around cars you can still be wrong from time to time.

very true, but I'm not wrong here. I stand by what I said. You can't get a dead nuts tune by sending in your ecu to some company, unless you are very lightly modded, and even then it's iffy... We're obvoiusly talking about two different things here, because you're referring to actually having the car rather than just the ECU

by the way, what kinda car do you have?

I have a Cobalt SS Supercharged. I see what you're saying too. Not every engine has the exact same tolerances and things are bound to be different. I just know that after seeing what's been done with the car so far combined with repeated successes the tunes I would buy are so close it wouldn't matter to me. So long as I don't put a CAI on my car I can use someone elses tune. I don't think I would ever send my PCM out though, just buy the binary file for $100 and then pay the other $100 for the two credits needed to run the software. Check out this web site. http://www.intense-racing.com/ If I was going to buy a file, I'd buy it from these guys. Things are a little different for the Cobalt. I like the support in place for the car. I also like Hondas. Lots of support in place there too. But, anyhow the tunes are good so long as you provide the appropriate information.
