Default timing belt lifespan

Stupid question but Im curious. I just bought the 2000 civic SI and it has 106K miles on it. I dont know if the last owner changed it at 100k or not. Is there a way I could look at the belt and see? Also, if it broke right now, no warning, while I was driving, would it fry my engine?

Well, I don't think "fry" is the best term. "Severly **** up" fits a little better. If the TB breaks on a B16A (interference engine), there's an almost 100% chance you end up with bent valves, unless you are incredibly, indescribably lucky. So basically, ask the previous owner if it was replaced, or for safety, just go replace it. Just in case.

My civic has only 65,000 on it and my belts squeeks. It started doing it latley... now it kinda sounds like i have a wussy turbo under the hood... when i pass 2500 rpm (somewhere around there) it stops... i guess from the engine noise? anybody know what it is?

yea dude, 106k, but it has to be mostly highway miles, the car is totally flawless! seriously looks brand new. I found out how to look at the belt to see if its worn or not, just have to take off the valve cover, ill try it when I get home. I hope its new cause ive heard its a bitch on the wallet to replace, like 500$ and i just bought the damn car sooooo! yea

Do yourself a favor, do what Kappa22 told you to do. "Ask the previous owner if it was replaced, or for safety, just go replace it. Just in case." You may THINK the belt looks good to you. Every timing belt that I have replaced has "looked good" until that final day. Then several hundred to a grand later the car is back on the road. Either ask or replace. Play it smart. You should be looking at $300 tops for the job.
