Wow.. there goes my car.

But why the hell should I allow somebody who I know screwed me over fix the problem? That's just like saying that if I go to the doctor's office for a cut and leave with a broken finger because of something he's done, I should be obligated to pay him to fix it.

I wanted to mention as well, he noted on the invoice that it didn't run, clutch didn't engage, and so on when I brought it into the shop, therefore, I could not have caused the engine damage because I had no opportunity to run it between the transmission job and towing it to the shop.

I just stumbled over to this thread after seeing that you're looking at selling the car.
You sound pretty convinced that the mechanic made a mistake, but let me ask you this: have you ever had the timing belt replaced? (I might have missed it, but I don't think you said you have.) 90,000 miles is when it should be replaced, if not a little bit before...and you're at 115k. If its never been replaced, then it is in no ways the shop's fault, because timing belts to just break and go bad. Or it has never been touched and the tension slowly loosened causing it to slip a tooth or two. If that is in fact the case, you most likely had piston-valve contact and have at least a few bent valves. If you're pistons are ok, the only work you would have to do is in the head, so it's not a terrifically difficult repair. It may cost around the same as a new engine, but at least you would have a new HG and T-belt.
