Default Window problems on 98 Civic EX

I have two, perhaps related, window problems in my 98 Civic EX coupe. First, the driver's and passenger's windows have awful smears, seemingly from the felt seals along the base of the window. These seals seem to be melting and when I raise and lower the windows a waxy susbtance is deposited on the windows. What is this called and how much might it cost to fix? Could I do it myself?

Second, the driver's window will not close completely. (The passenger's window is fine.) I can get the window to within an inch of the top, but when I try to completely close it, the motor produces a horrendous clacking as it unsuccesfully tries to shut the window. What might be the problem here and how much might it cost to fix? Could I do it myself?

Thanks.

Jim

go to the link in my signature and download your yr's civic service manual (96-98) and it should give you some guidance on your issue. Sorry that I cannot be so specific as I have not had your issue myself.

Yes, you can fix these problems, which are probably bad weather stripping and a misaligned window/bad window regulator. Pull off the door panels (see mundy's info), and the underlying problems will likely be evident.
