When to bleed the cooling system

When to bleed the cooling system
Does the motor need to be at temp or cold when bleeding the cooling system. Common sense would say at temp, being the thermostate would need to be open, but working with hot coolant just doesn't seem like fun. I found the bleed screw, by where the top hose connects to the motor....
I figure to just run it and open this and see if any air come out. I am having idling issues, and this seems to be something everyone recommends to check...air in the cooling system..

RE: When to bleed the cooling system
OK, so I do it with the engine cold....
I have a '88 civic DX, but was told when I bought it that a different motor was installed. I found out last night how to look on the block to the right of the exhaust manifold and see what motor is in it now.
My problem is it wants to stall when I have the clutch pushed in and the engine is idling. Some suggestions have been IAC, altenator, and bleeding the coolant. I just have not had a chance to look at anything yet.

RE: When to bleed the cooling system
Don't just go adjusting the idle screw.
Try cleaning the IACV with some carb cleaner, and also check out the FITV (if you have one its on the bottom of the throttle body)
