It is possible to do without that...I used a screw driver that was bent 90 degrees and that worked perfectly

Depends how bad the screws are in the rotors. You might need it, you might not. Either way, make sure you're using the right size bit (probably a #3) or you could easily destroy the heads of the brass screws.
