i have a 98 civic with 90,000 miles and it seems like only when i acceleate or decelerate i hear almost like a grinding/winding noise going on...its very had to explain the sound and ideas on what it may be coming from? its pretty loud..i can hear it really well inside my car

 

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Try driving close to wall with the windows roll down to help isolate the noise.

 

Make sure your transmission is full of the proper fluid. Manual transmissions don't have a dipstick, you have to unscrew a plug to check.

It is helpful to have a friend outside the car listen while you drive past/around him or her.

 

accelerating and decelerating? are you sure it's the same noise. very hard to diagnose with just saying a sound. can you feel vibrations? or just sound. could be a number of things.

 

If it's coming through your stereo it's interference or a potentially a bad ground.

 

well first i was going to say of course manuals have a dipstick, but then i noticed you said manual transmissions, but then you say unscrew a plug?? you would be looking in the engine not the transmission?!?

 

The fill and drain plugs for the manual transmission are located near the inboard joint of the passenger front axle (see picture).

 

ok now i know what plugs you meant. Though unscrewing the filler plug will not tell you what is in there, only if there is too much as it will come out. and the bottom one will let you know if there is oil in there or not.

 

the top bolt(filler bolt) u take off to check the fluid level and to fill with fluid. just remove the bolt and look inside with a flash light, if the level is right at where the bottom of the bolt is then its fine. when filling thetrans u just fill it up untill fluid begins to come out of the hole.the bottom bolt(drain bolt) is just there to do that, drain the trans fluid.

 

The top fill hole serves two purposes: (1) To check the oil level (by sticking your finger into the hole) and (2) to add oil (using a funnel) if the oil is low.

The bottom drain hole is used to drain oil from the transmission, for example if you wish to replace old oil with new.
