Warning about Valvoline Synthetic Brake Fluid
I once used this on my 93 Integra with 80k miles on it, and the fluid ate away at the old seal in the master cylinder and caused it to fail. I replaced it, then used the same fluid and it was fine. I am assuming the rubber saturated with the conventional stuff then the synthetic stuff ate away at all the conventional causing the seal to deteriorate. So if your going to check brake fluid on an old master cylinder you might consider using the non synthetic stuff. food for thought.

Actually DOT 4 IS compatible with DOT 3 systems. It is DOT 3 that is not compatible with DOT 4. What you are thinking though I think is that DOT 5 is only compatible with DOT 5. You can use DOT 5 if you have brand new brakes lines, brake calipers, and brake master cylinder. Basically you can use DOT 5 if everything is new and no other brake fluid DOT4 and below has been used. They are the only kinds that do not mix.
