v-tec
i'm wondering if i can put the v-tec module from my 1997 Civic SI to a 1996 Civic DX (American EJ6) The engine in the SI is the D16Y8, where the engine in the DX is the D16Y7
are the D16Y7 and D16Y8 essentially the same engine?

The VTEC feature is all built into the cam and cylinder head. The bottom of the engine is the same except you'll need to take the oil restrictor out of the non-VTEC block. Then put the VTEC head on.
Or you can swap the whole engine over. The D16Y7 and D16Y8 are identical except for VTEC. For that matter pretty much any D-series engine will bolt into any 1990's Civic.
After you have a VTEC head or engine in the DX, swap the ECU and run wires to the VTEC solenoid to complete the conversion.

Mini-me is much easier. Remove head, bolt new head on, install P2P ECU, wire up VTEC, perform IACV wiring fix... done.
Engine swap is the same procedure except that you'd swap in the entire engine instead of just the head. And, out of the mini-me you get a brand new headgasket since you have to change it when you remove the head.
