tricks to put back fuel pump
hello, everyone:
fuel pump on 1992 civic LX need to be changed. I pulled out the old one easily, Somehow I hard a very hard time to put the new one back in (same size, right pump assemly for this car). I could put the new pump into the fuel tank in a 30 degree angel (from front-back line). I need to turn the pump clock wise so the holes (6 or 8hole)on the pump match the balts on the tank. This just can't be done. I spent three hours, just can't position it to where it should be. Is there any tricks to adjust the pump assemly after you slide it into the tank? Please help!!!

RE: tricks to put back fuel pump?
Thanks for the message. May be I did not make it clear. I bought the pump and hanger together asone ready-to-replace assembly. The question was how to adjust the whole asembly once it is in the tank. Somehow it not smoothly to turn it around once you slide into the tank.

RE: tricks to put back fuel pump?
It IS a right pump assembly. Initially I thought this might be a wrong pump assembly . So I tried to put the old one back on. Even the old one (bought from Honda dealer, lasted less than two yrs) can not directly go to the right position. You have to turn this thing a little once you slide it into the tank. The final result is I can not put either one on it.
The tank(car) full of gasoline is just dangerously sitting there over night. What should I do? Anyone please give advice!

It sounds like a bit more time and patience rather than tricks are needed -- Take a break to clear your mind and then get back to it. Patiently try a multitude of different angles to slip the pump back into position. Don't force it. There's likely one angle where it will easily go in. (I know, easier said than done)

For 1992,civic, the fuel tank is under back seat. You don't need to take down the tank to access the pump.
Just take off the back seat. You will see the metal cover that covers the pump. unscrew the cover, disconnect the power, disconnect the air presure, unscrew the big(17mm) nut, unscrew 8 nuts that tighten the pump hanger onto the tank, turning a little and pull slowly in an angel in front of you. Then the pump is out. Take less than 10 minutes for anyone to do it.
I thought that put the new one should be as easy as taking out one. Yes, you can easily slide the new one into the tank. But it does not go directly into the position. In someway, you have to turn clockwise 30 degree to perfect align the balts to the 8 holes on the pump assembly , so you can tighten the pump hangerdown to the tank. That gives me big headache, There is a metal sheet inside the tank (probably for detecting gas level) blocks the way when ever I was trying to make this adjustment. Anybody has done the same work with 92 civic, please tell how to make this turn happen. Otherwise the whole replacement won't take even 30 minutes to finish. I am wondering there is a trick for mechanics to turn this thing.
