Noise from inside the tranny would go away when you push the clutch pedal down. Noise from the throwout bearing would only occur with the clutch pedal pressed down. If you have a whirring/grinding noise in neutral that's just the bearings on the transmission input shaft. It's inside the transmission but you can open it up and change those rather simply without needing a whole transmission.

its a manual, and yea im positive. my second gear pops out of gear when i coast around a turn in gear, and thats if i can get into gear. usually ill hold the clutch all the way in and ill have to slam the stick back into second just to get it into gear or else it just grinds away even more than it already is.
It pops out of gear? that might be your clutch because if the tranny is bad, then you would be in gear and you just hear your engine rev up and you go nowhere

"Poping out of gear" can also be caused by the shift linkage or faulty motor mounts that let the engine move and pull on the linkage. If it grinds when you try to shift to reverse with the engine running and the car fully stopped, that means the clutch doesn't disengage fully.
