Default timing belt

hey guys n gals, i just bought this 87 civic wagovan with the 1.5. it has 113,000 miles and runs perfect. the po replaced several parts before sale. he gave me a timing belt, water pump, valve cover gasket and tensioner. said he had no reason to believe the belt was ready to go but was gonna change it as a preventitive measure.

i have changed timing belts n chain sets on other vehicles before with no issue, but this is my first honda. is there anything special i should know before i tear into it. i see on you tube that there is a special crank pulley tool required to hold crank still while removing bolt. i have a manual and it just says remove the bolt.

does the 87 1.5 need that tool also?

thanks all...

with diesel above $4 a gal these days, this will stay parked for a while..

there's mix review on the crank bolt tool, but replacing the TB is similar with other TB job on other cars.

A good impact wrench will remove it no problem. Replacing the timing belt on the CVCC's is super easy since there's no motor mount in the way.

The crank pulley tool worked great for me, I've only used it on 6th and 7th gens though. You can always take it to a shop and have them bust it loose for ya.

i have an impact... so i can give that a whirl. from reading other posts, it just sounded like it was installed from factory with some kinda hellified loctite, and wouldn't budge.

the others i have done were removed easily with my impact.

"cvcc's" what is this?

There is no loctite, just lots of torque. If not properly tightened, the bolt will come loose and the pulley fall off. It's conventional right-hand thread, turn counterclockwise to remove.

When you pull the pulley off, there is a small loose metal key in the slot, be careful not to lose it.

will do on the key. think i will tackle this tomorrow, yes thanksgiving day! as my employer has given us the opportunity to work thru yet... another holiday weekend.

yes, i know i am being a whiner as some people are not working at all, but to have the weekend before a holiday off... and work us every holiday weekend is freaking pointless!

timing belt/tensioner/water pump went pretty easily, didn't have any issues with anything. took me bout 3 1/2 hours start to finish..

off with the old..

on with the new..

wanted to replace thermostat while i was at it, but the dang thing is apparently buried behind motor somewhere. i gave up on that idea...

bit it runs like a watch and with that belt changed... thats one less thing to worry about. and the old belt had "honda" printed on it. don't know if that means it's the original or not? maybe you can buy one from dealer and it says honda on it... i dunno.
