yep. it said something like fuel inefficiency, dont remember exactly. i didnt get the exact code, but i'll go by later this evening and get it rechecked. regarding the cat, is there any after market one that would give me decent gas mileage and be affordable at the same time (im not overly concerned about the emissions coz i live in alabama ). anything more than 26mpg (city) would be great ( i really dunno much bout cats ). i would really appreciate your recommendations.

EDIT: The code was P0420. said something like catalyst efficiency below threshold.

there is not much to cats. I guess the material is what costs a lot. All the catalist material really does is complete the burn on unburned fuel. Most people consider that material a brick, because it is just like a brick in there that gets really hot. Most cats will burn through and get less efficient with time. Others crack and break and clog up due to thermal shock or other such problems. If it is clogged you can probably hear some rattleing when you bang on it(make sure it is not hot when you do this). This is the case that would give you less power and bad fuel economy. So first try to see if you have rattles. As for suggestions,.. go with a universal one if you don't have such strick emissions laws as in California. Go to muffler shop and see what they quote you.

Oh the only time you have issues with using a universal one is when it is mounted directly on the exaust manifold. Where is yours located?

The attached picture describes how to read the SRS trouble code for 1996-2000 Civics. If the procedure is the same for your 2001 Civic, perhaps you could determine and then post the code, which experts on this forum might be able to interpret for you.
