Default squealing when heater is on

hey guys,

so i noticed this squealing sound today that i'm pretty sure only happens when the defroster/heater is on. it just started snowing and so it might have something to do with that. before today i never used the air conditioning but i did run the heat some times but never noticed it until now. it happens at idle and when running. it only lasts for a couple of seconds then it goes away. i've read online that it could be because the AC compressor is going out and the belt is trying to turn but it can't. even though i'm using the defroster/heater and not the AC the compressor still tries to kick on, is this correct? since i am not using the AC is there some sort of quick fix to let me use the heat/defroster without causing this noise? i really don't give a damn about air conditioning...at least not at the moment, just the ability to defog the windows with heat.

EDIT: would removing the AC belt fix this problem? would i just not have ac? would i still have heat/defrost?

The quickest and easiest way to disable the A/C is to remove the A/C fuse under the hood. The heater will not be affected. Check that the belt is not just loose. In damp, mild weather, running the compressor dehumidifies the air and makes the defogger work much better, that is why it is designed to run. It could also be the alternator belt.

thank you for the reply.

do you know where the fuse is? is it located in the box next to the battery? do you know what the abbreviation is for the fuse?

i'm pretty sure it's not the alternator. i turned the defroster/heater off and the noise went away.

yeah i guess pulling the fuse would be better than what i had in mind (cutting the belt off)

There is only one fuse that supplies both, #56.

never mind...i found a trick online so that the ac condenser doesn't turn on with the defroster. i can't remember the exact steps but i think you put the temp to the coldest, turn the fan off, and hold the a/c and recirculation buttons for a while..this will cause the a/c button to illuminate when you use defrost and you can press it to disable the a/c. neat trick but i'm not sure if it resets if you disconnect the battery.
