Its either going to be the cluster itself, (which was the problem on my car) or the VSS on the tranny. Very common problem. Visit this link, I found it extremely helpful, hope you do as well.

i cant really decide....if the brakes go through teh cluster that would explain the speedo, but i have my shift light wired into my spare tach wire, which is in the engine bay and is nowhere near the cluster....

btw the speedo has totally fixed itself and the shift light has been working well for a while now, although every now and then it will randomly light up

that website is really helpful too, thanks!

so i've figured out that the probelm is almost nonexistent when i start my car up, but the more i drive the more the shift light flickers on and off and stops working. Every now and then it'll work right, so the problem fluxuates. Anyone have an idea of how to fix this? Again, the shift light is wired into the spare tach signal that is located in the engine bay.

i've never had this problem in the civic, my speedo just died all together lol. but i did have a 95 dodge neon that had a problem like that.and i was apparently a common one. in the neons after so many years use, the solder on the connections on the back of the cluster starts to disenegrate. they just add solder to the connections and it clears it right up. like i said i'm kinda new to the civics but maybe this will help...

swap in a cluster for a while, see the result. if it continues i'd trace wiring to the cluster for a possible short or open, if no problem. then the brain teaser was the cluster

the wire i have the shift light doesnt go through the cluster. My speedo is totally back to normal, no problems, that problem is solved, now its just my Tach going crazy.

The wire is located in the engine bay and i just extended it and ran it through the firewall. Its the spare tach signal that all 6th gen Civ's have.

update....so other than the self-test that all tachs/shift lights do when you first start up the car, the shift light doesnt work at all anymore.

Does anyone know how to fix the sprare tach signal in the engine bay, or do you i need to bring it to a shop?

EDIT: and instead of fixing it, is there another tach signal wire behind my cluster somewhere? Remember its a 99 DX that doenst have a tach in the stock cluster. I dont have a manual to tell me which wire is which behind there, so any help would be appreciated.
