Default Speedometer 10% too fast

My speedometer works as it should (odometer, too), but the speed displayed is about 10% faster than the actual speed of the car. This was determined by real time comparison to a "pace" car with a verified speedometer. The tires are stock 175/70-13.

What could be the problem? I thought the VSS either works or it doesn't.

Car is 1996 Honda Civic DX coupe.

Thanks,
Scott

I have 00 EX and 97 DX Civics. Both speedometers read approximately 3 mph faster than the actual speed. It's a well known problem.

DX has 13's and LX/EX has 14's. Confusing I know.

RonJ, do you suggest just living with this speedometer problem, that is, the hassle and/or expense are not worth it? I've had the car for two years now and it's not a big deal to me, but I like things to work for others that operate the car and for potential resale.

In my opinion, just live with it. Someone on Honda-tech figured out that putting on different sized tires brought the speedo reading closer to reality. I just look at my Civic speedos and know I'm actually traveling 3 mph slower than what I see. No big deal, and it reduces speeding tickets.

Thanks. I'll let it go. Ironic that a bicycle computer (with speedometer) is so easy to calibrate.

I went from the factory 14s to the factory 13s (heck of a deal. 4 brand-new 13's mounted/balanced on steelies for $125). I did notice that my speedo is off now, but not too bad. I'll just live with it.
