Default Spark Timing

Hey guys ive searched around and havent been able to find much, but maybe some gurus can help, what are the symptoms of too far advanced timing and too far retarded timing? Thanks all i know is:

Advanced timing= pinging

Retarded timing= power loss and poor fuel economy, maybe overheating

Thanks man, is there any other downsides to retarded timing? And does advancing the timing; although causing potential damage and higher emissions, improve power at all? Or response
