something broke, please help
to start, i drive a 2000 Si, only mod is a short ram intake. I just replaced the clutch about 10K ago and timing belt about 5k ago. total miles is about 115k.
i was drivng home last night and heard a faint knocking. as i was pulling off the road i heard a bang, and the whole car shook like i ran over something. the knocking is persistent, and loudest when i am increasing or decreasing throttle evenly. i can't hear it when the engine is under load until higher rpm's. i used a screwdriver to listen and it seemed that the noise was loudest above the piston closest to the trans (#4 right?). I took off the valve cover and everything in the valvetrain appears to be fine.
so any ideas what broke? maybe a spun bearing? any ideas on how to narrow this down some more without tearing the whole thing apart? Thanks in advance.

well a spun rod bearing doesn't have to be the end of the world. a machine shop may be able to polish the crank and/or replace the rods and put it all back together, for less than buying a new engine...

HAH! These days? Ppl are charging out the hiney-hole for labor. I was quoted 700 for piston rings on an 89 civ. That was just labor!!! I said screw that and got a long block 45k motor for $550 with 180 days warranty against any compression or knocking issues.

I thought about doing that, just not sure i want to mess with the whole thing while driving my truck. if i can drop an assembled motor in, it will take way less time. right now, i need to get thing going again, i can't take the time to shop the crank around for machine work, maybe decide to buy a new crank or maybe not, then the rods and pistons, having the block cleaned and magna-fluxed, etc. If i start to tear it apart myself, then i have to put it back together and i won't cut corners. it'll end costing way more cuz i'll put lot's of expensive parts in it. i know how i do things, and that is what i would do. thanks again.

Just like me. Might as well fix the crap and replace parts while you have it apart or just get a long block! EHEHHEh --- Yea MXS, his motor would be more expensive, you're right and I didn't consider that in my previous statement. --- Good lookin out.
