Default Smog check questions.

I need help. I am trying to sell my 96 Civic LXand I need to get it to pass smog. I failed the test today.

My HC(PPM) and CO(%) were bothdouble the maxat 15mph.

The HC was1 below the maxat 25mph but the other two were fine.

What should I look at fixing/cleaning? I kind of need it to pass smog by 4pm tomorrow. The buyer wants to pick it up at 4pm. Any help is appreciated.

could be wrong, but to me it sounds like your catalytic convertoris not working correctly. and thats not a cheap or easy fix, especially since its an lx cuz it has the cat integrated into the header. but it may also be some of your o2 sensors are malfunctioning and theecu thinks the air is cleaner than it is so it isn't adjusting to keep it cleaner...hope that makes sense.

like i said before they are not cheap, especially if you go buy one at a store, whih is what would need to be done if you need it by tomorow. most online places run them about 400, the cheapest I found is 320 here:
http://replacement.autopartswarehous...ld&dp=true

just search around on google and maybe you can find one cheaper. if your not able to do it yourrself, I have no idea what labor would be.

also as I said earlier, I am not sure if this is the problem or not so I would get a professional to diagnose it before you drop 400 for a new cat. sucks i know it cuz the header and cat are built as one peice. I meanif your selling it and you have to replace the cat,its almost worth just spending an extra hundred bucks, getting a cheap ex header, excat, and exhaust off ebay and maybe get a little more money out of the sale.

one last thing, all of the above is assuming that you still have the stock exhaust, if you have already switched over to the ex setup then it would only be about 150 to get an oem replacement.

the o2 is a good place to start if you're still stock.

Thanks. Yes its still stock. I called the buyer and left a message asking if he wanted me to get it fixed or just take some money off the price. I'm waiting to hear. I found a place that will pass the smog for $200 so I will offer him about $200 off if he wants to fix the car himself.
