shocks/struts question
Hi,
I have a '95 Civic DX that is badly in need of new shocks. I have never worked on these before and am finding myself confused. One question that I have is whether, if I purchase a strut assembly that is encased with a spring, is there another spring mechanism in the suspension that I need to replace or would that cover it for the springs (I know, duh!)? Also, do all struts incorporate a spring (is that the definition of a strut versus a shock absorber - just the added spring)? Also, I am seeing differing opinions as to whether Monroe struts are any good. My car has 210,000 miles and I do not drive it hard (use it only for driving for work). As it is so old and I am never sure how long it will last, I don't want to put a lot of money into these, but will if Monroe are crap. I do know that I want to purchase one of these easy install units where I do not have to mess with the spring separately. Thanks,
Andy

A strut is basically a shock that is mounted inside the suspension spring and also designed to handle side to side force. It acts as a structural part of the suspension, while a shock's only function is to dampen out bumps. It is very easy to take the strut/spring assembly off and back on the car. If you can buy new ones complete with springs and top plates mounted just unbolt the top and bottom bolts (but DON'T loosen the top center nut, that's what holds the spring on) and swap them out.
