Default Seat Belt Replacement

97 HX: (2 Dr. coupe)

The driver's seatbelt finally broke in two. Is it possible to replace just the belt without the retractor mechanisim and other parts. I can get a new Honda belt for about $75. Just wondering if I can install it myself.

Thanks for any help/ideas.

Looking at the service manual I don't see anything about removing the retractor, when it talks about removing the seatbelt it says about removing it with the retractor. Besides, safety wise I wouldn't mess around with the retractor myself...

Hmmm....you might to check to see if theres a recall on the seatbelt. If there is then honda can replace for you free.

Honda has a lifetime warranty on the seat belts, but I don't think it covers wear-out. The belt and retractor are a unit. They just bolt in.

I think the warranty should cover total failure, that car is a 97 the belt shouldn't have worn out so quickly.
Take it to a dealership, if they refuse tell them it is a safety issue and if you drive off the lot and crash and die, it would be on their hands.
If that doesn't work, call the main office in your area and they'll help you out. Dealerships try to get out of any warranty work...

Really it should have been replaced long before it "finally broke in two" since it would be weak and prone to break in case of a crash a long time before then.

Ya, the dealer is tellin' me to take a hike. I complained to Honda motors and the rep. there said he would look into it, but he told me they cover only the belt latch. I don't have time to fight with them over this so I found one in a junkyard for $50 - was in a hurry to get this car (my daughter's) back on the road so had them install it for $60 more.

Thanks for all the info and Ideas folks. Appreciate it!

They just bolt in. Ya, if you can get to it! Remove rear seat, side panel, and a large metal crossmember in the back to get to the lower bolt which holds the retractor in place.
A bit of work. (I don't like work)
