Thanks y'all. I have been looking for my manual the last half hour. My wife is pregnant, and has been nesting - i.e. all my stuff has moved. I will let you know how it turns out.

 

I tried jumping the fan to the car battery - nothing happened. I guess I have to replace.

As far as replacing the fan/motor, do I have to disconnect parts of the a/c that is attached? Just wanting to find the easiest way to get it out and the new one in.

 

how did you jump it? double check
run + and - to it. to make sure.

and to remove just unbolt it from the condensor and unplug the clip.

 

So I got a new motor, put it in, and it started up fine. I let it run for a few minutes with the a/c on full, then it sounded like the engine had a load put on it. I stopped the car, and the fan was hard to turn, as though it seized up.

I double checked the old motor (should have started there) and it worked when I jumped it! Dang!

So, now I don't know where this leaves me. I have tried switching the 2 relays with each other (prior to the motor switch). I am not sure what else I can check?

Please, let me know if you have any ideas...

 

Your new motor is defective. Get your warranty on it. Put another one in. If the fan did seize it may have blown the fuse also.

The old one may work sometimes. If you move it to a different position it can revive for a little while.

 

The motor works, when jumped at the relay housing. Could all of this be due to the a/c pressure switch? How do you test this? Could it be a lack of freon?

I am at a loss right now. the relay works, the motor works, the connection between the two work.

Any ideas?

 

Think about a few things logically--

Your new fan won't spin freely by hand= it is defective.

You get cold air while driving= there is enough refrigerant. DO NOT ADD ANY REFRIGERANT.

Some cars control the fan according to pressure, but not your Civic. The fan should run all the time the compressor is engaged.

As you can make the fan run by jumping the relay socket, substitute another relay of the same type to see if the relay is bad.

 

You have two bad fans. Get another fan, I would waste my time with the old fan. Fan motors that are going bad will work some of time when their getting old. For the relay, I would put a volt meter on the connection and see you are getting voltage when the AC is on.
