Rough Idle

Rough Idle
Hey guys, I seem to be having another problem with my 94 civic [:@] My car idles very rough and it almost feels like it wants to shut off, if I happen to turn the steering wheel a bit it shakes a lot harder and eventually shuts off. When the a/c is on the car feel like it gets a bit more power and the idle is not as rough. Also at one point when the car was on park, the engine just shut off, and it did not want to come back on, so I waited for about 10 minutes and then it finally came on. I need some help!

RE: Rough Idle
Im not sure of a fix, but I do know there's a screw you can adjust that sets the IDLE speed for the car. Maybe it got lose and set itself really low. Lemme try and find a pic in my service manual.
Ok hope this helps this is for a 97-00 but it should be the same.

RE: Rough Idle
Have you done general tune-up work, i.e. replacing the distributor cap and rotor, and cleaning or replacing the spark plugs. Worn points in the distributor cap and rotor cause rough idling as does dirty/worn spark plug tips.

I don't know if it's a good idea to touch a factory set idle screw. Chances are you probably need to do a thorough tune up including: New fuel filter, plugs(get the NGK import v-grooves like it says under your hood), wires(get honda OEM), cap and rotor(honda OEM), PCV valve (get a honda OEM!), maybe a O2 sensor (I don't recomend bosch, but they do make the honda OEM), and clean out your IAC valve with some carb cleaner while you're at it. You'll probably notice the small screen on one of the IAC valve holes is gummed up with dirt and grime. Also make sure you clean the mounting surfaces good for your IAC as it has to sit flat for the double o-ring to seal properly. The one on my car appeared to have had dirt leak past the o-ring before I got to it[:@]. I used a bit of RTV silicon around the rings to improve the seal. Give the holes in the manifold a good squirt of the carb cleaner as well, it doesn't hurt and it will remove the carbon and dirt build up. Adjust your throttle cable too. If it's too tight you're car will run funny if the TPS is out of idle position, there should be a tad bit of slack. Pour in a bottle of injector cleaner, I used some penzoil stuff and it worked pretty good.
Another point of issue with the older civics is the Main Relay. It's located next to the fuse box above your left foot and is attached with one 10mm bolt. You can take it out and open/pop the cover off. Check to see if the solder points on the circut board are broken. If you have broken solder points you'll see a little ring in the round lead blob on the pin. The break will be barely noticeble to naked eye on a few of them or all of them if that is case. You can resolder or buy a new relay it's up to you. When my car kept dying for no reason and then starting 10min later that was my problem. The solder points get hot and lose contact due to the breaks on the points. When it cools you they shrink and make contact again and your car starts... very annoying! It also leads to poor idle as the computer and such are not getting consistent readings due to power irregularities.
It might sound like I'm flogging the honda OEM stuff but; I found it fits and works better, than any of the other stuff I've tried to throw on my car (1993 civic LX D15) over the last couple years.
I hope this helps... my car runs smooth, and I can get 700km on a tank of gas on the hwy (120-130km/hr) or 600km in the city hard driving.
good luck

RE: Rough Idle
While you're at it, with the engine running, take that can of carb cleaner and spray all your vacuum lines. If the idle changes (up or down) you have a vacuum leak at that hose and needs to be fixed as this will also cause your problem.

bad injectors could also be a cause.... have you tryed SEAFOAM?
Whats a SEAFOAM?
how does your brake pedal feel? does it feel not like it use to, could have a leak in the brake master cylinder?
Actually it feels different, when I got it back from the shop the brake pedal felt very stiff.
