Default replaced axle but the car will not move?

I am not sure what I did wrong. I replaced both axles because both boots were torn off and the CV joints were ruined. I topped off the manual transmission with SAE 10-30 as said in the owners manual. I put the car in both rear and first gear; all I hear is some kind of soft grinning. What did I do wrong?

I put the car in both first gear and in reverse with the engine off and tried to push the car, the car moved as if it was in neutral. Will that confirm your hypothesis that I did not put the axle in all the way?

sometimes its hard to get them in all the way i usually like pull back just soo the boot stretches and then push it back in quickly a couple times until she pops in

I agree with dudes96.

Are you sure the replacement axles were identical to the original ones? For example, was the diameter of the splines identical?

What is currently the gap between the differential case and inboard joint? It should be about 1/8" to 1/4" at most.

That’s it. There was about one inch different between differential case and inboard joint. I think I ruin the axle because the tip if the axle was grind down a little bit and that may make it impossible for me to get it to sit right. I will take it in tomorrow and see if they will swap it or I just pay for a new one.

Before installing new axles, you should also look for possible damage of the differential grooves that engage the driveshaft (see picture). There will also likely be some metal debris that has to be cleaned out of the differential.

Good luck.

I looked in and it looked fine so I assume the metal is much harder then the axle. I will use magnetic to draw out the fine grinned up metal and change the fluid few times to assure long life of the transmission.

Thank you for your diagram and where the heck do you get them?
