rear window scraped up.

rear window scraped up.
So When I bought my car 2 1/2 years ago, the previous owner had used a razor blade to get either a sticker or decal off the back window.... And they didn't do a very good job. Top dead center of my back window is scratched and scraped to all heck..... Is there any way to sand and buff it back to normal or some sort of glaze or something that can be put over top to repair or disguise it? Or am I going to have to replace the entire rear window (which I really don't want to spend the cash).
Has anyone else seen or dealt with anything like this?
I currently have a Clash decal over top of where the goudgage is....But it still looks like crap.[sm=helpout.gif]

well do you have insurance... see if they will pay to replace it... or if you have a low deductable.... just smash it out and claim it....

You could try this, but it might not take out the deep scratches: http://www.properautocare.com/polishglass.html

I agree with mxs. This may be considered an act of insurance fraud.

RE: rear window scraped up.
I just recently had my windshield replaced by the insurance company. It was the original glass with so many rock pits and clouding from sunburn that you couldn't see a thing when turning into the sun. I explained to them the condition of the windshield, they kept asking me if it was broken. I told them 'No, I'm trying to get new glass so I don't crash my car because I can't see with the sun in front of me.' I also explained that I was calling them first to see what they could do for me since I've been paying them for 16 years. The guy asked me why I didn't just break it and have them replace it anyway, and I told them I that that would be dishonest (my line of work is kind of based on my personal integrity and staying out of 'fraud' kinds of trouble). I guess they liked what they heard - they called me back about 20 minutes later and told me to go ahead and get new glass and they'd pay for it (minus my deductable, of course - Hey, new glass for $50?! I'll take it). I'm guessing they figured a $280 windshield was worth more to them than having to replace $2380 of car (black book value).
You might call your folks to see if they'll authorize the glass to be repaired - some insurance companies won't even charge you your deductable to get rock chips and small cracks repaired - it beats them having to replace the glass altogether. Remind them that gouges and major scratches only get bigger with time and weather changes. (I had a windshield in one of my trucks split all the way across during a freezing cold morning a few days after it received a rock chip on a warm day)
Hey if it works once, it's worth it.

Replace the friggin window!!!! What you're trying to do is put radiator stop leak in a radiator. All it's going to do is clog up the damn system and require a coolant flush and radiator repair anyways! -- All your going to do is fog up your window and cry about it later and wish you had replaced it.
Do the right thing, don't skimp! Replacing the window is an investment. Taking the risk of turning scratches into cracks with a little bit of visibility issues? Priceless.
