Default random no start, sputter, stall

Ok, I'm new here. I've searched thru the posts and have tried just about everything suggested. This car is driving me nuts. This is my wife's car. "89 CRX DX 1.5 auto". Has a new Main Relay and new air filter so far. Here is the problem. Car will start and run fine one day, and not the next. Sometimes it starts and cuts right out, then does not start back up, after waiting a good 5 minutes, it fires up. Acts like it has a miss at idle, especially in Drive or Reverse, checked plugs and look good, gapped to .044. After I checked the plugs and put it all back together, it started up fine and miss was gone, let it idle for a while and still ok, took it for a ride and made it 1 mile before started to notice sputtering, especially on acceleration, drove for another mile and car stalled, would not start for 5 minutes, during that time, pump would come on and I can hear the relay click, just would not start. Finally limped home and barely made it, sputtering like mad now, pulled a wire, checked for spark and did not see any, I was rushing cause I had to go to work so I might have messed up on the spark check. I will have to look at it some more. I have not looked at cap and rotor yet, nor thefuel filter. I have not ohm'd plug wires. I've had the ignition switch apart and lubed everything up as someone had suggested to me before. I've been working on this on and off for 2 months and I need my car back, wife needs hers. Thanks in advance.

Best thing to do is replace the cap and rotor, if the problem persists i would suggest testing the coil out as well. check the resistance on the plug wires. Sounds like the little beast needs a tune-up lol. Be sure to check for proper fuel pressure from the pump and at the fuel rail.

Just to follow up, I replaced my cap and rotor the next day. All my problems are gone. Looking at the cap closely I can see small hairline cracks at the posts inside it. There were also little condensation drops. It's all better now, though I am going to get the wires and fuel filter as well. Can't hurt! Thanks for the help

No problem man, glad everything worked out for you. I say you finish doing the tune-up to make sure that the car is running efficiently and so that you don't have to worry about anything like that again for a while. It's always good to have a good running car and to be able to rule out the ignition if any future problem comes along.
