Default Preventive/ Routine Mataniance.

I own a 98 Civic DX 1.6L with 73k miles, 5 spd. Knock on wood, it's running good right now, but I bought it used and idk how the previous owner took care of the care. I wanted to do some preventive check ups/ tune up soon too save headaches in the long run b/c i plan on keep the care a long time. Any common problems these cars have when they get up in age, or any tips for things to change/ replace would be helpful?

Here is what i plan on doing so far

1. Change oil every 3-4k( Anyone have a recommend brand or does it really matter?)

2. New fuel filter
3. new tranny fluid
4. clean air filter
5. new plugs and wires

Thanks

Good plan.
Use a full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil and good filter like Purolator.
Use Honda or Honda-compatible MTF.
Use NGK plugs and OEM plug wires. Replace the distributor cap and rotor with OEM parts as well.
Also replace the coolant, brake, clutch, and power steering fluid. The power steering must be Honda compatible.
--Replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and drive belts in about 20K miles.

Do the wires, oil, fluids have to be bought at a Honda dealer, or is a local auto zone or advanced autoparts store ok? Wheres a good place to get these things

Purchase most fluids wherever you can get appropriate quality products for the best price. For example, I buy most fluids at Walmart. I purchase MTF from Honda.

Plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and wires can be purchased from your local auto parts store, though certain knowledgeable members on the forum recommend purchase of plug wires from Honda. Here's where I purchase genuine discounted Honda parts online: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/
