Power Steering Pump Rebuild Gone Wrong... help needed
#11
Well Ron, I got it working. Thank you very much for your help.
I took the pump back apart, and then noticed that on that round thing where the little fins stick out of, I was missing 1 fin. I then searched the entire garage on the floor with a flashlight and found the missing fin. I put it in, wiped the insides out with a shop towel, and then put it all back together. I put the pump on the car, connected the lines and tensioned the belt. I turned the key all the way without starting it (to unlock the steering wheel) and then I turned the wheel back and forth to bleed the system. I added fluid as needed to the reservoir, and then turned the car on. I bled it some more and refilled. I put the car all the way on the ground and turned it on, then turned the steering wheel back and forth... no more noise or shaking!

I'll bleed it again tomorrow then, I may not have turned the wheel enough times when the engine was on.

You should be fine. With that vane missing, the pump would've put out a badly pulsating pressure when under load. So that was the problem. Pretty bold to take apart a power steering pump, most people would say replace the whole unit but it's really expensive.

Alright, that explains it then. Thanks.
Yea, it cost $40 to replace the bearing and seals, so it was definitely worth the extra work. It actually wasn't that hard to take apart and put back together and i'd recommend it to anyone who needs a new one to just rebuild it, as long as they have somewhat good mechanical skills.
