Default please help engine knocking n no power

hello everybody, i am new to the civic scene , i recently purchased a 97 2 door civic from a buddy of mine who had pretty much ran the car out of oil, i believe it has a sohc vtec. the car still starts n runs but it is knocking n has no power, my question is where should i start, should i jus find a new or used motor to put in it, or is there something else i can do to salvage the motor thats in it, im hoping to spend under a grand to get this car up n going again, does this sound doable or what. also im not really looking to up the performance or anything like that , im gonna try to keep it pretty much stock. any imput is much appreciated

If the car is knocking the rod bearings are prob shot and it might have messed up the crank and so on. How many miles are on the car? Replacing the motor might be the best thing to do. Are u going to do the work your self? If you are i think u could do all the work for under a grand.

if the car has no power then I'm guessing you don't have much compression. Eather the head gausket or the piston rings, bearings.

You should be able to replace it yourself for under a grand. Find a used engine for 400 bucks, buy a clutch (if it's a manual), replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, cap, rotor, wires and plugs.

You should be back up and running for many many miles for under a grand.

Yea I kind of figured I would have to replace it. I just wanted people with more knowledge to confirm. The engine has 150,000 miles on it. Thanks for all the replies.
