Overheat in traffic jams... !!

ah i think i just have water in the radiator, no actual coolant, i'll get some tomorrow then!

Yeah plain water is bad for your engine, it will corrode. Always use coolant. It really sounds like a fan problem though so once you're sure it's full let it sit and idle while watching the gauge closely. The fan should come on before the gauge rises above the normal halfway point.
