it would help if we need what year and model.

you should be able to hear the compressor clutch engage when you turn on the a/c. if you do not hear a clicking sound, then you are correct in that the compressor is not engaging.

you also want to make sure that your car takes r-134a rather than the r12. you cannot buy r12 at the auto parts stores and you cannot mix the two. so make sure you look and see what kind of refrigerant your car uses. if it uses r-134a then you can go ahead and buy it in the can. it is more helpful to actually measure the amount of refrigerant by measuring the low side first before adding refrigerant.

if you choose to add the refrigerant and then the air is no longer cold after a week or less, then you have a major leak and you need to get that fixed first.

Check for blown fuses. Do not add refrigerant unless you have proper gauges to measure freon pressure in the A/C system.

To properly troubleshoot the problem, search the forum for a downloadable service manual for your Civic. Low freon is only one of many potential causes for a non-functioning A/C system.

RonJ is right. You need a manifold gauge set to see the pressure on the high and low side of the system. if you do add freon yourself then make sure you add it to th e low side of the a/c system
