So I'll probably be called an idiot for this one Since I've had this car the heat contol unit never lit up....it never occured to me it was supposed to. Is there a fuse for the heater unit? or should i just pull it out and replace bulbs?

 

the fuse that runs those bulbs is the same that run the rest of the dash lighting, so if the rest works, then the fuse is fine. Should just have to replace the bulbs

Yes if the dash lights up but the heater control panel doesn't, the bulbs in the panel (two of them) are probably burnt out. The panel has to be taken out of the car to replace them. Remove the dash trim, then the radio, then reach up through the radio opening to unscrew the 3 screws holding the panel in.
