got a 1998 civic SE and the ignition key has broken off in the barrel, I spoke to a firm who specialise in these things and they tell me it can cost anywhere between £90 to £250 depending on whether or not they can extract the broken key. Whats more they said they wont know how much it'll cost til they've taken the barrel out and back to the workshop to attempt an extraction.....so if i commit I could end up with a bill for £250 if I want it or not. I can't afford that sort of expense at the moment, so I'm thinking of changing the ignition barrel and key.
Does anyone know how to change the ignition lock barrel? and are there any associated problems such as problems with the immoboliser? The guy from the car lock place was telling me horror stories about coded keys and having to change all my locks. I dont know if he is just using these tactics to convice a poor girly that she needs the professionals.

help and advice would be appreciated.

It's probably going to be just as expensive to replace the whole barrel.

 

You should replace the whole barrel. When the key is worn down that much that it jams and breaks, the barrel is also going to be in rough shape.

 

My car was recently stolen, and my dad works in the parts dept at the local nissan mercedes. he just got me one of these, i'll see if a can get him to tell me how much it was. I am picking it up at his house this week, so....
