Default jdm engine swap

does anyone out there have any info on the legal issues ( cali dmv/smog requirements) , when trying to install a jdm motor into your car. I would like to upgrade a 19 90 civic dx d15br dpfi to a later vtec.,or other not to expensive swap. The car is for my son, so he does'nt need alot of power. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Oh yeah this car is to registered in ( aaarrrggghhh!) california.

maybe some one from cal will come around.
in texas, there is txdot.
tx department of transportation - they have a web site that covers the emissions stuff. i have read only a little of it.
perhaps cal would have that and give you some insight. and if not, then perhaps you could email them.

your d series may pass.

jdm b series swaps are pretty tough, however, because of their higher compression ratios.

b series are easy to pass. at least for me it was. i live in cali, and have a 91 hb w/ a 93 ls engine. its reffed, smogged and leagal. and yes you can put jdm motors in and have them passed. i asked the guy when i was having it reffed. if you go to dmv, there is a pamphlet for the B.A.R association with a phone number on it. call that number and ask about what motors you can put into your car. they will then give you a phone number of a local referee. you call him and leave a message with your phone number and he will call you back in one -two buisness days. you can ask him any questions you want. they are usually happy to help. i had my guy on speed dial. lol. and if you have any specific questions, i might be able to help. good luck
