The diagrams below should help. Some pointers:
1) I rent a Pitman tool from O'Reilly or AutoZone to separate the lower ball joint. During this procedure, definitely protect the end of the castle-nut bolt with an extra bolt.
2) You don't really need to drain the transmission fluid. You'll loose a little during the process. Just top off the fluid if you think there was a significant loss.
3) Purchase a new axle rather than a remanufactured axle. The price difference is inconsequential.
4) The axle nut is 32-mm (134-lb-ft). You can rent the socket and torque wrench from the auto parts store. (rentals are free, by the way)
5) If necessary, you can use the force of the swinging hub to (gently) pop the axle into the transmission.
