The fuse blows if you exceed the AMP rating on the fuse, and if the AMP lead is plugged into the fuse hole. If it is not in the fuse hole, but the unfused one, you can instantly self destruct the multimeter.
To measure volts, set up the multimeter for volts and simply touch the positive and negative side of the area in question with the appropriate leads (RED + BLACK -).
To measure amps, set up the multimeter for amps and complete the segment of the circuit in question with the multimeter. Do NOT use a multimeter to measure the amps your battery is producing! This will create a short circuit and you will instantly destroy your multimeter! There are special ammeters that can tell you if your battery can pull the several HUNDRED amps needed to turn a starter motor.
To measure resistance, set up the multimeter for ohms (omega symbol), ISOLATE the circuit in question, and close the circuit with the multimeter. DO NOT measure ohms while there is power applied in the circuit!

dont mean to be pickie; but the middle hole is used to measure volts, ohms, and amps (milliamps). the top hole also measures amp, but on a higher scale (10 amp scale).
