How do you tell that your timing belt is bad??

just look for cracks and looks really brittle dry, doesnt look like new rubberish material

this maybe slightly off topic but what could you suggest to do to keep your car tip top. i know my car has been serviced regularly, and i have nearly owned it a year, i have done oil changes fuel filters and little things, what would you guys suggest to do as regular maintenance to keep your car running at the same performance as it did new... we havent got seafoam here so i cant use that stuff though it sounds like some good stuff, im talkming about things such as valve timing, adjusting your throttle cable your so it is taught changing air filter, any little things to get your performance/efficiency back up to standard.... and if you could also post links/pics on how to do these jobs i think this could be a real good resource thread for future readers....
