Default Honda Civic Coupe 1997

it is a standard version. I'm able to start the engine in second gear.
It runs smoothly after that. However, the switch does not start the engine.
may somebody tell me what might be wrong?

Do you mean you can push start the engine but it won't start by turning the key?

When you try to start with the key, do you hear any noise (a click) from the starter? If you hear a click, turn the headlights on and try to start with the key. Do the headlights stay on, or do they dim out?

Most likely it's the starter itself then. Click but won't start is how they usually go when they're worn out.
