Default Honda Civic 2001- Shifter Release Problem

My Honda has an issue w/ the shifter not engaging from Park into gear. I have to push in the shift release button to engage into gear. I was told it may be a blown fuse but looking at the interior and exterior schematics for the fuses, I do not see anything that would relate to the shifter. Aside from pulling and checking all the fuses does anyone have any info to help me out? thanks

Check the rear brake lights when pressing on it.. if your brake light doesn't light up, then it your brake switch went bad.

The switch send signal to your solenoid to unlock so you can shift when depress on brake.

Hey thanks! My brake lights do not work so that must be it. Where is the solenoid located?

Don't worry about the solenoid. You need to fix the brake lights, then the shifter will work. It goes without saying that you shouldn't drive anywhere in traffic with no brake lights.

See if the horn works. If it doesn't the fuse is probably blown (same fuse for both, at least on older models). I think on the 2001 the fuse is in the box under the hood.

If fuse OK, check the brake light switch by jumping it. The switch is above the brake pedal so the arm for the pedal presses it when no one is pushing the brake pedal. Unplug the switch and put a jumper wire in the plug (car side) between the two large wires (if it has 4 wires, if only 2 wires jump the two wires). The brake lights should come on. If they do, replace switch.
