When one sometimes cranks but doesn't start, suspect the main relay. Especially if the check engine light stays on while cranking, it should go out while cranking. Replace it or resolder it. This relay is located under the dash on the left side wall of the car just above the hood release lever.

Next things to check would be to see if the ECU shows any codes (if it does, they may be old, so reset it and drive until it won't start again then check codes again). Also take one of the plug wires off the distributor and see if it is making sparks when it is not starting. The engine does crank every time but not start, right?
