Gears grind when engine is hot
Hey everyone, Just pruchased my car (89 civ w/b16 5spd) and the transmission will shift just fine before the engine reaches normal operating temp. If i hold the clutch in until the engines rpms reach idle it wont grind. I was wondering if anyone know what the cause of this was from. Im going out tomorrow to get some 10w30 castrol synthetic oil, maybe the trans oil in it now has been worn out?
thanks for your help

Oh ok, thanks for letting me know to use light oil. I read a thread earlier and someone said they were going to use 10w30. And yes every gear will start grinding but 'only' if the engine has reached normal operating temperature. Before it warms up (about the first 10 min of driving) it shifts fine in all gears.

You may need to adjust the clutch cable. Take 3 or 4 turns clockwise on the plastic nut at the transmission end. That will make the clutch disengage earlier. The clutch should disengage when the pedal is about halfway down. If it does it right at the top of pedal travel, loosen the cable (turn nut counterclockwise) or the clutch may slip and wear out.

you just are gonna have to hold the clutch in for a few sec's longer before shifting to the next gear, push clutch in let the rpms drop down then shift into the next gear.
it sounds like something is messed up in the trans

With the car sitting still, engine running, in neutral, push the clutch all the way to the floor and hold it for a couple of seconds. Then try to shift to reverse. If that grinds there is a problem with the clutch. If reverse works OK but you have trouble going up through the forward gears, the syncros in the transmission are worn out.

I did everything you said and it didnt grind when putting it into reverse, neither did it grind with forward gears. Its only if i dont hold the clutch in long enough while driving. It will shift fine for the first 15min of driving. Then I have to start holding the clutch in for longer periods of time or it will grind (wont grind if i hold it in long enough[3-4 sec])
