Default gas fuel light won't turn off

Hello, 2005 Honda Civic SE. I was driving home today. All of a sudden my radio stopped/turned off for a second an then came back on. Kinda like it restarted or something... when that happened my gas/fuel light was on, and the gauge is showing basically an empty tank. I know for sure i am at like 60% full. What's going on? Seems like an electrical/computer issue. Is it safe to drive at least until i can get it looked at by a technician?

Thanks,
Jangles

Sounds like there was a short under the dash with your gas gauge. I wouldn't worry about the gas light yet because the gauge shows empty & that would make the gas light come on anyway. It's safe to drive till then. If you don't know how much gas you have just put $5 in the tank..and you should be good for the next 70-90 miles(depending on MPG & road conditions).

The late model instrument panels contain a computer. It has a self test function which can be found in the service manual.

The first thing to try though would be to disconnect the battery with the key off to reset all the computers in the car (If you have the factory radio, make sure you know the radio security code). Then reconnect and make sure the connections are secure.
