Failed e-test - High HC HELP!
Hello, I'm new to this. I'm canadian and am looking to fix my Hydrocarbon problem. I was told that my engine is not burning all the fuel and letting most of it go out the tail pipe. I was also told it might be a vacuum problem, computer problem. I changed my o2 sensor a few years ago. My car seems to not be as effecient as before.

It could be a number of things, among the most common is:
Ignition system failure as mentiong above,
Burned out intake gasket,
EGR valve stuck open or not working correctly
plugged fuel injectors,
O2 sensor(although since you replaced it highly unlikely)
Throttle position sensor
exhaust leak,
The hardest to pin point is a burned head gasket. This happened to me a few years ago. The car was running fine, but every now and then the temp would creep up. I replaced the thermostat, radiator, and new fluid thinking it was lack of cooling related, but it would still creep up. Then my cousin suggested the head gasket. This could cause it to overheat and you not even know it since it is a very small little leak of coolant(steam) into the combustion chamber and make the temps rise and efficiency go down. The coolant never appeared to go down in level, but the temps it produced in the combustion chamber were apparent enough in an emissions test. Replaced the head gasket and it passed without a problem.
I am not to familiar with the 92 engines so some of the above mentioned may not apply(like EGR for instants) That is just what you would look at in general.
I hope this helps.

RE: Failed e-test - High HC HELP!
good post, except it will overheat because of the combusting air/fuel leaks into the coolant, and its obviously hot, so it heats up the coolant. and i dont think thats the problem, but a quick compression test will tell alot.
